Chapter Eleven

I get home to find an unwanted guest on my doormat.

“Quentin, what are you doing here?” I step around him to unlock the door as he stands up.

“I’d rather tell you inside.” He motions to my apartment.

“Let me explain how this works. You wait to be invited in. You don’t order me into my own apartment to talk to you.”

“May I come in?” he asks through clenched teeth.

“I suppose. There’s actually something I want to talk to you about, but you go first.” I step inside and toss my keys onto the kitchen counter. I usually leave my door open so Midnight can wander in, but Quentin closes it behind him.

He clears his throat before he begins. “We found something in Donovan Shepherd’s pocket. We didn’t think anything of it at first, but when his family came to retrieve his personal belongings today, they said it didn’t belong to Donovan. It belongs to Jessica Scanlon.”

“What was it?” I ask, wondering why Donovan would have something of Jessica’s. Jessica didn’t even seem like she liked Donovan.

“Her class ring.”

I grab two bottles of water from the refrigerator and hand one to him. “Like a high school class ring?”

He nods and lowers his head as he takes the bottle. I know what he’s thinking. We exchanged class rings for a while as well. Only we gave them back after we broke up.

“So you think Donovan and Jessica dated at some point,” I say.

“It seems that way, but I don’t have any confirmation yet.”

“Maybe not confirmation, but I have a story for you that might fit that scenario really well.”

He leans against the counter and opens the water bottle. “Go on.”

“Okay, when Cam and I first talked to Jessica, she didn’t seem to have a high opinion of Donovan. She made it a point to mention how he’s a serial dater, and no one knew the woman Lena that he brought to the party. She seemed bitter about it, and I wrote it off as Jessica not being a fan of guys who date lots of women.”

“Makes sense.”

“Until today, when Jessica was opening the engagement gifts and read the card from Donovan. Before signing the card, he wrote ‘I love you both.’ When Jessica read that line, she fell into a fit of hysterics.”

“Do you think he really meant that he loved her?”

“I didn’t at first. I thought maybe she felt guilty for speaking so poorly about him earlier. Until Jessica opened the next card, which was from two coworkers at the library.”

“You know her coworkers? How much investigating did you manage to do behind my back?” He takes a swig from his water bottle.

“Is that really what you want to discuss right now? I’m about to piece this together for you.”

He tips the bottle slightly in my direction, indicating I have the floor.

“Inside the card was a gift card to a restaurant called Bella Dona. When I talked to the two coworkers—separately, I should mention—they each brought up how Jessica raved about that restaurant.
